Many cleaning supplies can irritate your skin, eyes, or throat, and possibly cause headaches and other health problems.  This all ties back to the ingredients in the products.

When we clean our home, we want the deepest clean possible.  However, when harsh chemicals are in the mix to achieve that deep cleanliness, we are not being gentle on the people in our homes or the planet.  Cleaning products are one area where there are a LOT of brand alternatives that can clean your home while also healthier for people and planet.

The structure of One Shade Greener at Home provides product recommendations in three categories:

  1. Light Green options have better ingredients and more traditional (typically plastic) packaging.
  2. Dark Green options have better ingredients AND better packaging.
  3. DIY Green options provide recipes that you can make at home.

Below are some brand alternatives in each of the three categories.

Light Green Brands to Consider

  • Aunt Fannie’s – This brand has a large range of products and can often be found at major retailers. Ingredients are transparent and on the product pages at www.auntfannies.com
  • AspenClean – This brand has all-natural cleaners packaged in 100% recycled bottles. They also have microfiber cloths to go with their cleaners. www.aspenclean.com
  • Love Home and Planet – This brand carries products for dishes, general cleaning, and laundry in a variety of natural fragrances. www.lovehomeandplanet.com

Dark Green Brands to Consider

  • Earthley – This brand carries a home care bundle and the packaging used has minimal plastic involved. www.earthley.com
  • Blueland – This brand has a wide range of products.  All have containers that are shipped with the first purchase. Subsequent orders significantly reduce the packaging. www.blueland.com

DIY Green Solutions

  • General Surface Cleaner: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.  Just spray on surfaces and wash clean.
  • Dusting Spray: Mix a few drops of lemon oil with ½ cup warm water in a spray bottle.  Shake to mix, spray onto a soft cloth and wipe.  Then, wipe the surface with a dry, soft cloth.
