I have written in previous posts that I believe the first step of sustainability is personal.
If our lives are not sustainable, we don’t have the space to solve difficult problems.
If we feel overwhelmed, we strive to just get by.
We are not advancing our thinking & solutions.
We continue to do things as they have always been done.
My Perspective
I started thinking about a Triple Bottom Line for a sustainable life.
How do we get our life to be sustainable, so we have the space to impact larger challenges?
The triple bottom line in our work, home, and community are people planet, and profit (pocketbook).
To achieve a life that is sustainable, those three dimensions change.
I believe the mix is plan, prioritize, and pattern.
Below is an overview of each of the areas:
PLAN: Understand the issues/areas of our lives that aren’t sustainable and create a roadmap.
PRIORITIZE: The second pillar ensures we are focused on the things that will make the most impact.
PATTERNS: Patterns are the habits and routines that work to remove burdens from daily life.
The issues making each of our lives less sustainable are different.
We need to apply different approaches that are tailored to our situation.
This triple bottom line can help us achieve balance in our life.
Regular planning, prioritization, and leveraging patterns move us to a more sustainable life.
Once our lives are in balance, we can begin to make an impact in other areas.
We can work toward sustainability in our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Your Turn
Do you feel like your life is sustainable and under control?
If not, how could you consider the personal triple bottom line to make change?
Are there routines you could implement to make parts of your day smoother?
