Today is a significant day for me – The Carbon Almanac is now available!
In October of 2021, I had the opportunity to become a non-paid volunteer working with others around the globe to create the almanac. Seth Godin, who has been an influential and inspirational part of my career through his books and blog posts, spearheaded the project and kept the group on track to deliver this wonderful resource.
This is a book that turns complexity into conversation.
Climate change is a topic that can seem so overwhelming that it’s easier to just avoid them than to find a way to dive in and understand. The Carbon Almanac breaks down what is happening into digestible, easy to understand concepts that can inspire conversations with friends and coworkers. The resource is one I will go back to time and again to relook at charts and educate myself on concepts. This will help me find the right words to talk to others about the challenges we face.
I’ve focused for many years on lessening my personal footprint and sharing what I was doing. That continues to be an important priority for me because we all make a difference. However, The Carbon Almanac also helped me realize this isn’t enough. We need to work with companies and governments to make the systemic changes necessary for substantial impact.
I believe this book will become an educational foundation for large companies and governments around the world acting as a springboard for innovation. The companies and governments are made up of regular people each of whom has their own journey to take to learn about climate change and determine how they can make a difference both at work and home.
I encourage you to go buy a book – for yourself, for your team, for leadership in your community, you choose. While a Kindle version is available, I recommend the physical book. This enables you to pull it out easily for reference, to set on your desk or coffee table to start a conversation, and to pass along to someone who is ready to learn more.
This has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my career. Teaching me not only more about climate change, but also how to work in volunteer partnership with a global team to make an impact.
I am reminded of a blog post I wrote back in 2009 that is still applicable today – Green is a Journey. A quote from that post rings very true as The Carbon Almanac launches:
Start small or start big – the choice is yours. My inspiration to you is to just take the leap and start somewhere. Remember, sustainability is a goal, the journey is what matters. Like any business journey, the key to success is developing a strong plan. Enjoy the process and share what you learn with others along the way.
Together, we can turn start a movement. Because it’s not too late.
Lori –
Loved this post. And the one it references (Green is a Journey).
Especially keen on the line “The key for any company is to begin to set goals and move along the path toward a more sustainable future.”
Set those goals! / Onward!
